Or did this altered picture get published in some way? And, if it did? WTH? how could that happen? lol

It was published, and home viewers spotted the alterations. Reuters excuse is that the editor responsible has such a huge load of photos to sort through that these just slipped through. Also they had worked with the photogrpaher before, and trusted him.
