Question about PS

So my friend was telling me about a feature in PS where you can pick three tones and then use them to make the picture with very little light look really good?

It was lastnight at a club so I'm not sure what the hell he was talking about, but does that ring a bell to anyone?

I just need to know what function this is so I can look for a tutorial.

Was he talking about Curves?

Ive seen a similar tutorial in a book ive got.

where you take a reading from the shadow, highlights and midtones/greyest area. Meant to work well on low light stuff

That's basically what i've been told.

I just need to know how to use it properly. I can't usually work with anything that I don't understand. Like if I don't understand what the feature is doing to the picture, I won't know how to properly use it.
