If I was to buy a D40 or D60 from Nikon. What Lenses will work with it and the D300 if I want to upgrade later?

What should I be looking for!

All of them.

Look for fast glass, f/2.8 or larger (smaller number) if you can afford it. For Nikon lenses the AF-S ones will auto focus on the D40/D60 you're looking at. For Sigma it's called HSM, not sure on the other lens brands.

Thanks Great info!!!

Anyone else?

 What else is there to say. Every lens on the entire planet that will work with a D40 will work equally well (or better) on a D300. Not sure how many more ways you want us to say it...but that's basically it.

I think everybody has said it right. Both the D40/60 and the D300 have dx size sensors. In the end you will have more lenses that work with the d300 over the d40/60 due the d300 having the focusing motor in the camera itself allowing for use with just about any Nikon made lens since about 1980 or so. As stated above, If a lens works wit the d40/60 it will wrok just fine with the d300.
Cheers

Every Nikon lens made since 1959 will 'work' on a D40 or D60, they have an f-mount just like every other Nikon. Some you will have to manually focus. Some you will have to manually meter and manually focus, and some will do all of that for you. If you look in the back of your camera user's manual it will even tell which ones are which.

There was a time in photography before AF and matrix metering with 300,000 image databases built right into the camera. Photographers took wonderfully sharp, near perfectly exposed images all the time without all the auto this and auto that.

Ok So Now with all that info I am happy!!!! Thanks alot people and sorry to ask such a silly question.

I did not think about it when I asked but I just wanted to make sure he was right!!!

Thanks Again and I guess this thread is complete!

Somebody linked this chart the other day. Very helpful when determining what lenses will work with what body. It's not 100% accurate, but close.

If you look AF lenses won't AF on the D60/40/40x (like the chart says they will). But beyond that, I don't see any problems.

New Question.

What lenses are Great for Weather? which I guess is the same as Landscapes.

Which would be great for Automotive pictures? I guess that would be close to Portraits?

Start off with a 50mm 1.8. It won't autofocus with your D40/D60, but you can focus yourself. This lens will be more for portraits than landscape. With landscape, you'll want something bigger. The kit 18-55 would work well for landscape, to be truthful. Its slower than some other lenses, but that's nothing a tripod can't fix.

I am pretty sure I am going to get a 50mm F1.8 or F1.4

But Now I am looking for the second lens. 18-55 or 18-70?? not sure or if I should get a bigger telephoto

All suggestions welcome

The kit lens at 18mm has some issues with distortion. Here's a good example. Look at the silos at the bottom left corner. They should be vertical. But other than that it's a decent lens, if a little slow.

YEah I see that. Thanks that was a great example.

So is there something better I can look at in lens. I am not locked in on anything yet!
