Reusing MiniDV tapes

I am using a Canon ZR500 Digital Camcorder, which takes MiniDV tapes. I guess when i want to record over these cassettes I just rewind the tape to the begining and than switch to camera mode, and begin recording? Just like I would with any cassette media?

So is there any way that I can format the tape within the camera? In the way that you format a SD Card? Also I am having an issue getting my camcorder to play the last video clip I recorded, I have to rewind the entire tape to the beginning and than hit play? Is there any way I can fix this?

no the only way to wipe it would be to record over it with the lens cap on

Most cams let you rewind while still in camera mode. You could use that and what is so bad about buying a new tape. They are expensive but still reusing a tape like you guys are talking about is like putting plastic forks in the dishwasher.

What about an electric magnet, I have been toll that was the way it was done in the old days like the 60's & 70's for audiotape.
