This time with a higher contrast... I took like four overexposed, one normal, and four underexposed. I think I might have gone a bit overboard.

I think it may be a bit overboard.
The needles on the tree have lots almost all of their detail, and if you can imagine it, if they were well lit and well defined, they would add some cool texture to this ****. I do like that green bulb though...

I would sat try it again and instead of trying to see a dramatic effect, look for even lighting. I mean look too pull detail out of areas that had heavy shadows, and toned back highlights (no blown out areas)....
