for macro photography? I've just been making home made reflectors, but was told a softbox might help.

is a softbox for macro photography?

well, that's like saying, is a camera for macro photography? :)

a softbox is nothing more than a light modifier, which can be used for any type of photography, depending on the effect you're trying to achieve. a softbox is diffuses the light as well as gives it more direction than a standard bowl reflector or umbrella.

if you want soft to shadowless light with your macro photography, a softbox will help, but you also need to surround the subject with light through the use of white reflectors.

now, you don't have to go out and buy a softbox just for this purpose, but you can try to replicate the softbox effect by using a white translucent material to light through.

hmmmm . so , why not try adapting a dome-tent, WITHOUT the flysheet
(just the inner-dome with sewn-in groundsheet)
would this be like a softbox which uses direct sunlight.
i'm thinking with regard to macro subjects/small products like you mention.
(obviously the taller/bigger the tent, then..etc). if you used a covered
table-top (w/o legs, laid on the floor), for a level, rigid base, the lighting
could look good inside what would be essentially, a translucent bag.

Jack-you can buy a product just like you describe, although I like your DIY idea.
