So is there anything I could have done to improve these shots? Or is it just luck of the snap since you can't control the situation?

on my monitor the pictures seem a bit dark, but then again mine isn't calibrated correctly. i like the first and "third" one, kind of wish the birds were a bit more exposed though

I've never done these, so I have little experience, but they all seem a little dark except maybe the first one. Some neat shots though. There is one guy on this forum who takes some AMAZING pics of airplanes in flight. He may be able to give you some pointers... I can't think of the guy's name because he doesn't post that often.

they are a little dark. I wouldn't know how to correct that at this point. Post editing of brightness always looks foggy to me. Did you do a continuous shot for exposures? That might have helped you get several to choose from?
