Only non-Canon lens I own. I tested it against the 17-40L and found from my tests that optically they were pretty equal. Speed wise the 17-50 won being an f2.8. Price wise it beat the 17-40L. The one area it lost to the 17-40 was in build. The 17-40 has the L build where the Tamron does not. At the time I bought it I needed optical quality and speed over build. Even though I now have the 16-35 f2.8L II, 24-70 f2.8L, and the 70-200 f2.8L I just can't seem to let it go. I know if I need if for some reason it will perform for me.

My 2cents worth. Hope it helps.

It a nice lens I picked it up recently and I have been very happy with the quality. The focus motor is kind of loud, but its pretty fast.
