What could make these better?

Use custom white balance. Have a flash higher at left or right side and at an angle. Use a light modifier to soften the light and shadow.

In addition to the advice above, bring the light closer to you, adjust to ensure correct exposure, and find a less distracting/cluttered background.

It's mostly the light. If this is the built-in flash, and if that's the only light you have, then maybe try to re-direct it somehow by using a couple of reflectors (think white foamcore). Place one smaller piece in front of the flash to redirect the light toward the larger piece off to one side. (You'll need some help here.) I've never tired that myself, but it should make better light than what you have now.

In addition to the other comments above, I'm not a fan of the cropped off top of the head on a full torso shot.
