There seems to be a lot of people out of work this fall.

First, welcome to the forum.

Second, unless you intend black-mail you are unlikely to make enough money to pay for a camera much less you when you first start out in photography.

The thing most of the general public doesn't seem to understand is that the P&S cameras have had millions of dollars of research done by some excellent photographers and engineers to make them where they can get a good snapshot by just pressing a button. A camera that is designed to do more than that has all (most) of that stuff left out so that it doesn't get in the photographers way.

Just taking a snapshot doesn't pay very much, you need to be far more flattering to your subjects to make any money. And if you are talking about Photographic Arts then you should understand that you must first be an Artist. The photographic part is just a decision made by the artist, the same as which clothes they will wear.

So, if you want to get into photography as a profession then get ready to settle in for a long haul, just as you would with a nice thick book- one that you can't just flip over to the end that is.
