The following photos are my first attempt at "professional" photograph. The photos were taken with a Canon 40D and the lens is just a kit lens. So I would love to hear some c&c. Thanks

To be brutally honest, you've got some way to go if you want to make it as a professional.
The first one has lighting issues, and the kid's face and the sky are both overexposed. Could benefit from a smaller depth of field as well because the tent in the background is distracting.
The second has a nice composition, but the sky is burnt out and the third I just find a bit boring, maybe try a lower viewpoint?

Thought you might like to see some post fun with that last shot... There is quite a range of colors there to exploit -S
