The D3000 is on sale and so I am looking at buying that instead of the D5000. Whats your opinion on trhe D3000?

I think the D3000 is a nice camera (replaced the D40 and D60, another nice set of cameras). However the D5000 has a much better sensor for high ISO conditions.

The D5000 also sports video, which does come in handy.

Yep, the D5000 will have better image quality even at lower ISO's.

The CMOS image sensor in the D5000 is the same CMOS image sensor that is in the D90 and the D300/D300s.

The Image sensor in the D3000 doesn't utilize the CMOS technology.
