What are you looking for with HDR?

My little Fuji has 37 fstops. The mid point is approx 1/25 sec. There I try to get a middle exposure of 1/25 then count down until the brightest highlight has a good exposure. From that point I just manually give 3 clicks for each exposure until the darkest shadow areas have some detail. Obviously this isnt good if there is movement in the shot. Indoors and outdoors with no kind of traffic is ok. Also no trees on a windy day. If your camera will do 9 ABE then just use it. It doesnt cost any more for 1 shot or 12 shots. Dont use what you dont need. But if you need another over or under shot, its too late after you've packed up and gone home.
