I did some searching to see if they had been discussed before but I couldn't
find anything of the sorts.

Anyway, for $300 could it really be that bad of an investment?

It would certainly be a bad investment if you realized, after a week, that they are not powerful enough and that you will need to get something better. If you don't need a lot of power...then they might be OK.
