What kind of post processing went on in this photo?

Some tone mapping (Topaz Adjust? maybe some Lucis Art on #1), other image editing.

In the second one it looks like he did some smoothing on the skin, too.

I wouldn't call that style "hyperrealistic". The skin looks like plastic; definitely lots of smoothing. I'm not knocking it though; the effect is pretty darn cool.

yeah looks like hdr to me
it must be a single raw file conversion then?
or is it easier than it seems at thought to make a 3 shot hdr with a person?

I would really doubt that it's tone-mapping. You can get almost entirely to the finished product in these shots with shadow/highlight and unsharp mask alone. When in doubt, you could aways open a MM account and ask them.

This looks a lot like careful lighting, unsharp mask with huge radii, and lots of local dodging and burning / contrast control.

Tonemapping to this extreme usually makes an image look like it was vomited on by a rainbow carebear, this looks way more precise.

I find the background much too busy and distracting by interfering with the subject, to make this an effective photo.
