Over the internet they are much cheaper but for Canada there is duty, tax, shipping and handling, etc. right? I was on 42photo.com and was going to buy from there can someone help thats already bought something from that website. Do you think id save if i buy from the internet? Buying from the usa is much easier im sure but i live in canada so could anyone help that would be great.

42 street Photo gets mixed reviews...http://www.resellerratings.com/store/42ND_St_Photo

Be very careful when searching the Internet for the 'lowest price'. It's a very common 'bait & switch' type of scam. If you are going to order from the US...I'd suggest B&H or Adorama (both have links on this site's links page).

There is no 'duty' on photo equipment comming from the US to Canada. You do have to pay GST and any brokerage fees.

You can get good deals at places like Future Shop etc. Some camera shops will match the price, if you would rather buy from a camera shop. The local store in Edmonton is McBain and they will price match other stores in Canada...so I just find the lowest in-store price and have them match it.

Try Henry's. I bought my Rebel Xt there and they were willing to deal. They also gave me money back when it went on sale later at another store. They have a web site as well: http://www.henrys.com

Cheers

For online I'm buying an XTi from adorama.
Shipping to Canada is expensive (57.50) but all said and 'done' (not including duty and stuff you'll have to pay when it gets to your house).
Adorama is $35.50 cheaper than B&H (USD of course). But that's not including a lens. Just the body.

I was unaware of McBains price match. This may be something to consider as I'd definatley prefer to buy something this expensive and have it in my hands after signing my life away than have it 'lost' in 'canada post/UPS land'.

There's a duty to ship to Canada if you order online from Amazon or Adorama or another online retailer? It sounds like savagery to me if they do. If you have any trustworthy friends/relatives in the states maybe they can buy it here and then ship up to you. Maybe I can start a camera smuggling business if you guys have to pay a duty up there, that just seems wrong.

Actually, there is no "duty" on camera gear etc...so that's good.

We do have to pay for shipping, everybody does. Where we get squeezed, is with brokerage. That's the fee that we may get charged for the service of getting the package though customs. I don't think there is a standard fee or any control on it...because UPS & FedEx change an arm and a leg for brokerage on ground shipments. If items are shipped via the US Postal Service...there is little or no extra brokerage fees. I think that if you use UPS or FedEx to ship by air...then the brokerage is included or is much less.

You still do have to pay tax (GST & maybe PST for non-Albertans).

I guess people could try to ship to people in the US and have them ship it up here as a gift...but that would probably fall under tax fraud and/or some other equally serious crime...which would make the risk outweigh the reward.

Neea, McBain does have a price match policy...but only for prices of things in Canada...so we can't use the prices from B&H or Adorama. Also, the price has to be in a store...not just at an on-line retailer. I usually check around some of the other Canadian retailers and find the lowest price and bring that in to McBain.
