#1. Why is it . . . .

I've only had two amusing run-ins with other photoenthusiasts while out taking pictures... one with a guy carting around a 20D and some kind of compact zoom (I shot a photo of him (taking a shot himself) with my lubitel and he was pretty friendly about it). The other was this weirdo with a little rangefinder and a telephoto lens and a bloody huge tripod... I was staring at his camera trying to see what it was, and it seems like he got paranoid that I was going to try to steal it.

Fortunately I've never run into any arrogant a**holes, but I've never really been in a situation where it was likely anyway... ie competing with someone at a sporting event, or going to a camera club field day or something.

I went into get some holga film processed a the "pro lab" and was (un)fortunate enough to run into a guy who runds a studio here. When I asked the lady at the counter if she could process my med format film, the guy (Standing beside me) asked me if I was a pro in a rather snide way. When I told him no I wasnt, he asked me what business I had shooting Medium Format film, and If I knew that it was more a pro film than a point and click film.

In not so many words I told him to shove it up his arse and asked the lady when I could pick my film up. Some people are just like that.

Totally appreciate where you are coming from. I sail quite a bit and its the same with that crowd. Most people are really nice and relaxed about it all, but some are a real pain. They seem to feel the need to constantly remind you that they are the champion of the "Borum Wood XXXIVIXX 2004 round the pond world rally championship" or something like that.

Personally this doesn't bother me as I beleive that they are just trying to make a statement. The really good photographers/sailors/(insert hobby here) don't have anything to prove.

Hehehe!

I dont consider myself amateur  but beginner :D , i've learn alot
about photography with friends and my bf and of course with you guys!
I dont usually talk with pro but when i have the chance i might make a couple of questions photography......there was a time i really regret it, a friend of mine took a photography course, he spend lots of money on it, he knew my interest on photography and some friends of mine told him about my photos, suddently one day he's talkin to me about photography and he says--> u know taking photos is not just point and shoot, you have to learn, everybody knows how to point and shoot and suddently its like i'm not aloud to talk about the subject.........it really pissed me off, he was attacking me just cause's i didnt study photography and he never saw any of my photos, besides i never said i was good.....
Now i look at him and think the money he spend was a waste since he hasn't been shooting since he ended the photo course....what a waste!

Hmmm so since high school I have been a fool? Does it change anything that I resource everything I can find?!

Jamie R: I don't remember saying so much that it was brand specific? In all actulality most of these guys have at least SOME Canon gear :( Eh either way being a little bit of a gearhead myself I understand what they think they are syaing/doing but it doesnt matter to me. I'm happy with where my craft is going so they can keep thier stuff

Good equipment never captures a great image when a monkey is working the controls

It can work the other way around too.

Ever since I got my Sigma 50-500mm lens about a month ago people have started assuming that I know stuff..not just about photography either

If I'm shooting at an air force base or an airport I'm usually the guy with the biggest lens and I seem to be a magnet for people asking all sorts of stuff....how long has this squadron been here?....how many aircraft are involved in this exercise?...is there anything special due to fly in today? I just give them a blank stare and say "I don't know, I'm just here to get a few photos" I'm sure they think I'm a pro  LOL. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Canon Fan - that's probably more to do with me using Canon for ages and getting a complex from people marvelling at the latest USM lens (better pretend I never said that).

I usually lie through my teeth - if anyone asks if I'm a pro', I'll deny it. And then ask them why. It's usually safer that way: then I find out that they were going to charge me extra, or escort me off the premises or call the police because they see a rocket launcher and a man underneath a cloth fiddling with some complex controls aiming precisely with a spot meter at some helpless little fluffy sheep in middle of a field. Once I got attacked by animal rights activists when carrying a tripod who thought I was a professional hunter stalking around (with a large format kit?!).

It's not always fun being considered a pro' - I don't always see that as a compliment. Usually from the kind of people who I've met, it's just a pretext for telling me I shoot commercial images which suck and that if I got a proper job, then I could shoot what I liked with whatever gear I liked.

Enjoy where you are in life; whether you're young, middle-aged or older.

Haha! Sorry you've had to go through that as well. So what kind of rocket launcher is that again?!

I actually didnt have anyone that i really knew thatw as into photography- but yesterday while standingo utside my freinds hosue waiting for a ride. He ahd his camera out (sony F717) which i had always thought he just used as P&S but then he started taking some pretty good photos of leaves and birds. The only time i ever knew he did much photography was when there was a comp on here and he decided to go find some shots. I was going to go with him but didnt have the time. Now its fun because we can go to the same spot and its interesting to see the different pictures we can come up with at the exact same location
