Other than the focal length, is there a real world difference in IQ between these two lenses?

A very slight difference perhaps in sharpness, but not noticeable really according to test reports. The 18-55 VR is the lens I would prefer to have honestly, it is lighter, it has close focus ability and has much less distortion and CA than the 18-105 VR. IMO, it is a slightly better lens. I have always valued my 18-55 VR and it is cheaper that 18-105 VR, if I want telephoto I use my 70-300 VR.

They both share the same downsides though, dreadful plastic build quality with plastic mounts and both have painfully slow apertures.
