1st post, a little C&C on some pics

Hello all. New here and been lurking round absorbing the great info (lots of it!!).

While waiting for my Nikon D5100 to arrive, I toyed with (cropped, colors, & a bit of cloning) some point 'n shoot pics to get the hang of posting here. I was hoping for opinions on the following:

I'm not too sure about the exposure or the focus. It seems soft, and I'm guessing the ice is supposed to be white...perhaps it's a little under exposed?

Composition could probably be better. #2 is better than #1, imho, as it shows more of the complete lines you have going on there. I like those lines, I just wish they weren't cut off. The contrasts in the monochrome conversion I like. As an abstract, it could work, but it's a bit cluttered, with many things to look at - that makes it busy. Lines are to be followed

See that log started in upper left, bending and ending in lower right? That's a sweet line It's blocked, though....

This look a bit better but it still isn't an interesting subject/angle/composition.

I do have to agree, however. It's very head-on. Maybe if you have gotten closer? And got lower? That would help show the texture better, and it would be a lot more appealing because you could see more sun coming through the....membrane....

These kind of shots can be difficult. There seems to be a fine line between good, unique composition on a still photo and random snapshot.

It's a leaf of Devil's Club that was buried in snow since fall and revealed in spring melt.

I like the curves in the branches and leaf as well as the ethereal nature of the leaf. I was curious about other's opinions of it as I was editing it for my scrapbook.

C&C can be tricky. For one thing....if you like the photo, then it's a successful photo. If it's not interesting to me, it might be very interesting to the next guy. Keep working at it, remember it's digital so don't just take one photo. Get close, back, diff angle, high, low, etc.
