Go dslr if you want the quality. Get nikon since you have a buddy that shoots Nikon. Get a d3200. Its the new entry level model they have out. Decent camera for your level. You dont want to many bells and whistle to begin with bc it would just confuse you. You can always upgrade the motor later.
