late evening sun in the desert, I dont know, possibly, does it look too red to you, if so, then yes it is, you were there.

I don't think these are too red. I would believe you from these photos that a setting sun in these surroundings does make these rocks look this red. Aren't they red by themselves, too? And even redder in the setting sun?
The photos don't look overdone or oversaturated to me, if that is your question.

the first one seems to be a bit like false colours though, a bit like in those old first colour movies. Also the sky seems a bit "metallic" .. but I might be wrong.

BTW, you have strong sharpening halos in the first one ..

The second one would be my favourite if it was a square crop without sky.

I really like the first. I agree about the halos- It was taken before dawn and I wanted too bring the lichen detail on the rock out. I kept losing the sky. Except now I lost it another way. I have to nail myself down and learn layer masking- or something like that.
