Well, tomorrow im going to pick up a used 24-105mm f/4L IS. I was going to get the 24-70mm but I figured the F/4 with IS is almost as good (or better) as f/2.8 without IS for wedding photography. So my plan is to use these for wedding ceremonies:

24-105mm f/4L IS with 5D + flash
70-200mm f/2.8L IS with 500D + flash

Other part of the wedding I will just use the 5D.

Thoughts?

42-70 is the better pic. and the F4 IS is not as good as F2.8

I'd get the 24-70. I have a 28-70 and its my main lens for jobs. You're already covered on the longer end with your 70-200mm on your second camera. I've found that f/4 lenses don't focus that quickly or well in low light, low contrast situations, which means you can end up missing a critical shot. Does the church allow flash photography? Some don't. IS only allows you to hand hold slower shutter speeds, which isn't much help when there's movement.

for wedding photography. So my plan is to use these for wedding ceremonies:

I prefer 24-105L as an all around better lens for pretty much general photography. For situations that wedding photogs and event shooters find themselves, the 24-70L is more appropriate. Get the 24-70L with the 70-200 f/2.8L... for Canon that's the bread n butter for wedding photogs.

You missed out by a couple of weeks. I swapped my 24-105L with my cousin's 24-70L and then sold the 24-70L on ebay. He wasn't as happy with the 24-70L simply because it didn't fit his needs as a walk around lens.

I still prefer the 24-70 f2.8, but that's just my personal opinion :) For weddings, the faster the better!

Yes the IS will help with lower shutter speeds, but the f/4is slower to focus than the f/2.8 which is key in a wedding ceremony

Not only that but the IS won't counter the subject motion when in dim light - so the bonus of a wider f2.8 aperture over the f4 is again apparent there (unless you don't mind the extra few stops of ISO you'll have to use if you can't use flash)

yeah.. i just sent an email to the lady and told her I changed my mind :(. I think 24-70mm makes more sense.

I think you made a wise choice.

The 24-105 is a lens on my list to purchase, but further down. I'd love that focal range on a full frame body for general street shoot.

i felt bad cause I already bargained it down to $825 lol. I am talking to somebody local right now. I will get the 24-70 for $1050.

Ok so if I do get the 24-70mm, which body during the ceremony? i want to use both cameras so I dont have to switch lens.

Depends on how you shoot and the size of the venue. I would say whichever lens you use the most, put that on the 5d. So big venue, 70-200. Smaller venue, 24-70.

If you like to shoot alot of wide shots, 24-70 on the 5d. The 24-70 will be more like a 40-120 on your 500d, which isnt very wide

very true twinky. I wish I had 2 full frames. I should have this 24-70 on sunday.

Actually, your setup is pretty good for those two lenses. Put the 70-200 on the crop sensor since that will give you more reach on the long, which you might end up needing. Put the 24-70 on the 5D. That's the setup I use. The 24-70 on the crop camera gives you an odd range.
