I need a new tripod head, as the BH100 from Vanguard isn't the best... it isn't very sturdy, doesn't support my gear well, and isn't very smooth. I don't want to break the bank on a RRS ballhead, so am thinking this will do the job. Thoughts? IF you have any sugggestions, I'm thinking between $200 and $300.

Hey Jake,

The AH2 will hold anything in your sig easily, the AH1 would do it, too - they're both pretty sturdy. I would say that though, as they're my client (I do the social media stuff for them) but I shoot commercially and use the AH1 / 2 and have had no problems.

Hope that helps, hope someone else has an opinion for you, too.

Best,
Sime

3 POD H3 (rated at 25lbs+) from Adorama will hold ANY of your gear. I have one on a 'Thing'. They are magnesium alloy, and rock solid. fro around $100. Unless of course you are more interested in brand names for show purposes. ;)

lol... 3Pod IS a brand name?

I thought so too. Maybe just not as "name-brand" as 3LT?

Well, if you did a little checking you would find that yes, '3 POD' is a brand name. It is the house brand for Adorama. But I really wouldn't expect people who judge things based upon price to have known that anyway. BMW's Manfrottos....gotta have the brand, and spend the big bucks in order to be noticed. Work product be dammed.

Sorry, but products made in some unknown factory in some third-world country by some unknown manufacturer, and then exported with a label slapped on to whoever pays money for that label is NOT a "brand name"...products like that are often referred to as OEM products...original equipment manufacturers. Products made by 'somebody' to be sold to 'whoever has money to buy them wholesale'.

A "brand name" is a product that bears the name of the manufacturing company, and which is NOT sold to multiple retailers or wholesalers around the world.

The difference is that a real brand name manufacturer tends to STAY in business for a long time. Like say, Manfrotto.

A good example: in 2012 I bought a carbon fiber tripod from Adorama; at that time, their house brand was Flashpoint tripods. Now, two years later, that tripod "brand" is gone...cough, cough, because it was NEVER actually a "brand name" item...it was an OEM tripod, bought cheaply.

No offense intended to the 3Pod people, but a brand name has an actual company standing behind it. An OEM product has a label, or a decal, or a sticker. There's a hell of a difference between a brand name product, and a one-outlet store's OEM re-badged products. That's why there is stuff called, deservedly, brand-name merchandise.

Any suggestions on tripod ball heads?

..So since the tri-pod you bought 2 years ago, and apparently still use is suddenly worthless because its name is no longer used? that is the attitude of those I was rederring too. I'll judge somethings worth by how well it is built, and people by their judgement.

The 3-POD head I purchased is a heavy duty magnesium alloy highly machined ballhead that holds a DSLR and 500mm lens rock solid in ANY position...and no plastic to be found on it. Sorry paying $200 more for a decal would make me feel stupid.

Then I'm an A$$ for buying into the LEE system for its fancy name...? There's a reason name brands are more expensive. Some of it is the name, sure. But it's also about quality and long standing history of producing good products. Granted, 3LT is new to the scene, I realize.

Not to mention that the first company to release a product before a million copycats come out has to put all the r&d into the product and design

And they are the ones to market the product saying how great it is. Without that you wouldn't even know what Chinese import brand xyz is even useful for

Sent from my Samsung Galaxy S4; probably while slacking off at work
