I actually kind of like the boat picture but wth did you cut off the wagon? The wagon would have made a great subject... But with that boats steering wheel and the color... The time looks appropriate

Extremely unbalanced framing (first photo). The RoT does not necessarily mean that all components and subject should reside in one particular third. The PoV shows that you may have taken a knee, but a prone position may have been a better choice so that all the subject was in frame. The story-telling of this shot says nothing.

Were you wanting C&C?

I put the wagon in the top of the frame on purpose. To leave the void. The wagon isn't intended to be the subject. in this case, void could be missing child. Handle on the ground, open space. void.
it may not work, but that is why the foreground is left empty and something I practice occasionally.

if I was prone I would have lost the open space, yes. cc appreciated.

There has to be a subject. If not the wagon, what is the subject? I can appreciate practicing, but you have to have an intentional practice, particularly if you post for C&C. I can also appreciate having an 'open space' in front of your subject if there is a purpose. I don't see any. Please explain you intention because I am at a loss on this shot. Please realize that many on TPF are experts at sniffing out bovine excrement.

the subject is what is MISSING from the frame. The purpose of the wagon is to show there is no one pulling it. The open space is to show something is missing. Did you not read what I posted above? If I didn't pull that off, as I expect I didn't. Then perhaps you can explain how I could do it more effectively. if you don't understand what im doing having the subject being what is MISSING from the frame. then I guess you aren't much of a expert and I SMELL excrement if you aren't understanding this photo and my above post and are still asking me the purpose.

hell, a missing child photo has a empty swingset or something.... And that sure isn't professional or a expert thinking of that...

maybe I should have put a ball in the frame, a pile of toys, or fifty balls with no kids and put it in big bold capital letters, a entire play ground or maybe a amusement park .

But seriously, this is all about camera and where im shooting this from. close up I didn't see it, just the handle and part of the wagon was too simplistic (and people would have told me it lacked composition :meh:) so I ended up with this and going back to trying to take advantage of a left open space. I even put the wagon in the FAR corner of the frame and cut it off JUST to make it OBVIOUS it wasn't the subject and the open space OBVIOUS.

Perhaps I need a new camera angle or a hundred balls.....

definitely a new camera angle apparently.

The boat photo was extra, im back to working on what is missing from frames at the moment, not what is in them. I just tossed that in for kicks.
if you dont know what im working on, trying to get figured out. Dont cc and tell me your a expert. save me the headache.

There isn't anything to balance the wagon and the tree trunk, and the wagon particularly seems cut off.

If you want to try using space to convey something it would probably help to study up on composition. You could do a search on elements of composition in art, that should get some sites that have info. on using the elements - space, line, texture, form/shape, color, etc.; and the principles of composition - balance, proportion, contrast, pattern, etc.

If you have to explain it then it probably isn't conveying what you intended.

it isn't conveying what is attended apparently. negative space draws attention to a subject. I went through this on here a month ago over subjects it went no where.(well you have to have a subject I was told) The use of negative space here should (theoretically) draw attention to the wagon (which everyone thinks is the subject) as that is usually how the eye travels. The wagon, should (theoretically) being that far off in the frame and cut off make it clear that isn't actually the subject. which leaves nothing but the open space and the wagon handle drawn into it.
Maybe i should have moved the handle more into the open space facing it, and shot from further back making more open space, and through in a ball. I put this in bw to give a dead feeling. like maybe the kid grew up, went somewhere, who knows. But the wagon is still there. The wagon is of course red. I thought too red for this.

toning it down might help, the wagon looks a little too good right now. Everyone is probably trying to stare at the wagon.
The frame is intentionally left unbalanced to give the void, (negative space). Apparently it needs a lot more of it.

I only gave an opinion. It is certainly your option to accept or reject and your attempts to provoke me into an argument are futile. There are a multitude of ways to evoke the emotion you are striving for, but IMO, this attempt was a miss. Nothing wrong with that, but there is no need to be so defensive. It seems that you have gone from a practice session to a definitive stance about a shot that has no relevance on its own merit. My point was simply to offer that this particular PoV and framing of the void may not have been that effective in sending the message you desired. You can guess about me all you wish. I never claimed to be the expert because there are many that are far more experienced, however,I have been around the block a time or two. Obviously you do not care for my opinions, so now you don't have to furrow your brow anymore. I never said you photo sucks, but I will leave you with this little tidbit, being receptive to criticism is the first step towards evolution. Good luck in your future endeavors.

Objects or shapes (including areas of negative space) don't necessarily have to be even, they can be asymmetrical and still achieve balance. But an area of space needs to be balanced with other areas of space or shapes/objects.

I think the boat picture has better balance and use of shapes (the wheel and the power pilot) but would be better without whatever's at the top, it's hard to make out what it is; and the upper right corner being washed out seems like that part of the photo's just not there. I like that in sepia, works for the subject.

If it doesn't portray what I wanted, it does suck. Apologies. And im not trying to provoke you, I want you to give constructive cc toward what im trying to do. Camera angle maybe, a method. If you are going to cc, cc on what im trying to do. I know the frame isn't balanced, it is purposely unbalanced (I shot this wagon three times before I got it that out of the frame trust me it was purposeful). ive been trying to figure out how to pull off these kind of shots for three months on and off. im really into trying to understand the importance of what is missing from the frame and showing it. Not so much negative space, but beyond that to negative pieces that aren't there. And im starting to get real pissy. And it is getting harder now. Least before I could show untraveled snow to aid.
Tried one a couple weeks ago too, that didn't work either. Dog house with no dog and untraveled snow all around. I knew if I posted that someone would probably just keep staring at the dog house (but that didn't have wheels I couldn't move it). im getting cranky.
lol

However I do apologize
