How to Create Your Own Planets Using Your Panoramas | Photojojo is an easy guide to fake the effect.

Some far better results can be had by using panorama software that can stitch directly to these co-ordinates. But to do that properly you'll want a panoramic tripod head since the parallax error on the floor under the camera would be quite severe.

The term you're looking for is polar panoramas, and there's many more tutorials out there on google for this.
