3D - Distance and Zooming

Does zooming work when capturing distant objects?

I would have a camera with up to 20x optical zoom and a long rail to vary the IA. I don't know how flat images become when zooming and how zoom affects 3D in general.

Are there accepted formalae to determine IA? Does focal length enter into the equation?
