580exII Malfuntion, Need Help

If you read my other post you will know I had quite the bad shoot. Well as part of that the 580exII I rented is having some type of malfunction. I'd like to see if I cant fix it before I have to return it so they don't try to charge me for it.

The flash makes louder than normal zoom out, zoom in, zoom out noise. then the zoom option in the top right just blinks as does the pilot indicator and occasionally the green light below that. All that works is the custom function button, it goes to the c.Fn menu, but you can't do anything after that. Also the zoom button, which just tells your that the flash is off, but you can't revert it to back on.

Any suggestions. They didn't give me a manual with it, so I'm at a loss to look anything up.

Fix it? If I wasn't the one that broke it, I'd take it back and demand a refund for their equipment crapping out on me and nearly ruining a shoot.
