I wouldn't say your photo "sucks" by any means. Just catching one standing still around here is a chore. Here are my $0.02 on it for you. First, tough bird to expose for since it's basicaly black and white. Expose for the black, the whites blow out, expose for the white, no detail in the black. To improve the shot (aside from exposure) try not to center the subject (rule of thirds), get a lower point of view, fill more of the frame with the subject, and try to get a "catchlight" in the subject's eye.

By the way, the bird is a magpie, and I've yet to get a great shot of one.
