Looks a nice lens, Stig. I fave #3, a beautiful bird! (And in #1.)

Looks goods nice shots.#1 and 3 being the best of the 4 some. #1 The killdeer has some pretty cool eyes with a little more post work you can make them pop. Something I had in mind like this.

Thanks. I think #1 is my favorite of the group as well. #3 would have been perfect if the one twig wasn't in front of the bird. #4 could have been neat had it been closer, I had to crop/expand quite a bit, but I like how I got it right before diving, and the divot on the water, I had to save it.
The new lens is actually a cheap Sigma 70-300 DG APO, but I couldn't be happier with it. Plenty of lens for me personally.

Well I was impressed enough by my sigma 70-200 mm f/2.8 with OS that I'll most likely be going with a sigma 17-50 F/2.8 OS for my next lens. I'm still doing a bit of reading/research there, want to give the Tamron a fair shake as well - but so far the Sigma has the edge just because I've gotten such great use out of the 70-200 mm.

So would now be a good time to mention my consulting fee?

Lol.. seriously though, great series. Looks like a nice sharp lens - I'm sure your going to get a ton of use out of it.
Oops, was typing my last response as you popped in! Thanks a lot for the recommendation. I was a little torn between the Sigma and the Tamron but glad I chose the Sigma.

Glad your happy with it - looks like it takes some really great photos. I ended up selling off my Nikkor 70-300 mm AF-S G, It just wasn't getting any use after I got the 200 mm and a 2x teleconverter. It's a great combo, I've got 70-200 mm at F/2.8 and if I add the teleconverter 140-400mm at f/5.6.

I've been giving some serious thought to the Tamron 150-600 mm once it's released in the Nikon mount. I just haven't decided yet if the extra 200 mm reach would really be worth the cost. Going to have to mull that one over for a while I think.. lol. But for now I'm looking for something in a wide angle zoom so it will most likely be either be the Tamron 17-50 VC 2.8 or the Sigma 17-50 OS 2.8. Need to research them both, the Sigma is a little more expensive but I've had such great luck with my other Sigma that's kind of the direction I'm leaning in at the moment. I'm planning on hitting some car shows and such this summer and I need something a little wider than the 50 mm prime.

Well if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Stick with what works for you. Unless something drastic in the future happens, I know I wouldn't hesitate to try another Sigma. The mental aspect of knowing the brand and trusting it may be worth the extra little bit of dough over the Tamron in your case.

Yup, just going to do a bit more research - from the couple of sites I've looked at so far the Tamron is actually rated higher than the sigma in a couple of categories, so in the end that might be the route I end up going. Either way I've been very happy with all of my lens choices thus far, the 85 mm in particular will probably end up being one of my most often used lenses behind the 70-200 mm. The 17-50 probably won't be used nearly as often, just for a few events here and there and probably the next time I get down to the SAC museum. I discovered 50 mm is way to narrow on a crop sensor for that.. lol. Great portrait lens and it still has a lot of other uses but I was having to back way way up to get even a good part of the aircraft into the shot. I suspected that would be the case going in but it was the widest angle I had in the bag ATM, I had an 18-55 kit lens with my D5100 but I sold it with the D5100 anticipating that I'd be replacing it later anyway.

I've also thought about adding a 35 mm 1.8 prime, not so sure about that one yet. I'll most likely wait until after I get something in a wider angle zoom and see if that fills that niche enough to where I won't really need the 35 mm at all, I'm guessing that might well be the case since the vast majority of what I shoot is telephoto of some sort.
