A little insurance help

I use State Farm too. Great company, but the articles policy is an addition to home owners, just like Nationwide. I think you will find htis with most of the big names.

Have you considered starting your own business? It's cheap to form an LLC and if you do not try to show a profit or write off any costs/gear, it should have no impact on your from a tax perspective. Just thinking outloud here. May be worth checking into. . Once you do that, you can get business insurance to cover your gear. Just a thought.

Have you filed a claim with them? If so how have they handled it?

Nope. Never needed to.

I only ask because I've read some horror stories online of how they've handled their claims.

Very few insurance companies have good reviews on claims!

The next problem is your age. You would have to have your parents sign the policy. You may be able to get your own renters policy to cover your own items in your parents house / apartment. But again would need help from your parents signing policy and such.

I use State Farm for my gear. It's called a Separate Articles Policy and costs about $12.00 a year for every $1000.00 of gear covered. No deductable, covers theft, loss, and plain ole' clumsy accidents like dropping the thing on the sidewalk.

Does the "Seperate Articles Policy" have to be attached to an existing policy?

Mine works in a similar fashion ($8 fee / $1000 of value). I had to have my entire collection of stuff appraised and reported.

I pay $500 a year. For $20,000 in equipment and $500,000 in liability. Covers 2 people.

No it is a totally separate policy. I just called State Farm as all our other insurance is with them. All I had to do was provide them with Make, model and serial numbers. Since I am anal and keep paperwork I just gave them copies of my sales slips. All of it on there. The only thing it does not cover is business equipment or photography. They do have a policy for that as well, but it is more expensive.

That's very cool then. My State Farm agent told us it was part of the home, but I could have misunderstood since I have everything else with them. ;)

You might want to check with them. They also have an articles indemnity rider for home owners insurance, for things that have a higher individual value than is normally covered. My wife's wedding ring and jewelry has one as their standard rate is $3,000.00. She has a bit more than that from some family heirlooms that were given to her so we got the indemnity rider.

Personal Articles

That's where I added my photography stuff and higher end home theater items. I already had the wife's ring policy so they said we could just add it to them.

Well all something to consider, thanks a lot for all of your help!
