A question on papers?

I'm not sure where to place this, so I'll try here.

My color printer is an EPSON STYLUS PHOTO RX700 and I have always used only Epson inks and papers.

I've not heard much good about other inks ... but if anyone knows of a cheaper alternative I'll listen ... but I've not heard much about crossing brands on papers.

In particular, a local store has a load of Canon Pixma paper cheap.

What results might I expect, or is it a case where the savings will result in lowered quality of prints?
