A quick few portraits of my son C&C please

A friend kindly lent me a 50mm F1.8 Prime yesterday and I took a couple of photos of my son reading in bed...

How would you guys rate these... Only light from my sons reading light...

I think # 2 has potential. I wish we could see more of the story (ie...the book he is reading)

Over all these are really nice. I like #2 the best and #1 is good.

I agree #2 is clearly the winner here. Though, something about how the light hits his face is kinda strange to me.

Nice shots and as everyone else I think #2 is your better image because it looks more natural shoot some more and experiment.

I agree #2 is the stronger image.

I'll also add that you will want to work on your culling. Huh? Well, #1 and #2 are essentially the same shot. You should pick one to show, and cull the other.

Generally, my goal when I take out the camera is to get one great shot that can go in one of my portfolios. Since most portfolios have a limited number of slots, that means I have to bump something to make room.

Obviously w/ family pictures you can keep adding portfolios across time... but I'd still suggest setting a pretty high standard for what you choose to keep. Why? Because it will better hold the interest of potential viewers.
