Is that a path?

I'm not sure what I am looking at. I wonder if this was in color if it would actually be better and have more detail. I'm not sure what the subject is.

The maze of trunks and branches is amazing !
Two things if may I. Noticed, that DoF is a bit short at the front, some may like it, some may question that. Another thing is HOW much sharpening you did with this image ? I see straight white lines on most of the trunks. Maybe it was too much ?

I didn't sharpen but did use SEP2 which tends to sharpen when using high structure. It is possible that combined with the compression of blacks in jpegs at 72dpi is not allowing the grayer values to offset the sharpness. I'll look at it again.

I cut quite a bit off the front as I felt there was too much OOF in the foreground. I was shooting an 80-400 lens which of course is going to compress the heck out of the fore-space. I just liked the shot and didn't feel like trudging all the way back to the car for my 17-35.

Eh, you know what ? I was looking at your picture initially on different monitor. Now, at home, I don't see this artifacts, nor I don't have the feeling of general over sharpens of the pic. So the look might be depend on the type of screen or maybe rather software generating the image on the screen. Sorry about my comment, but for myself, it is good to know for the future, that this things may occur.

Honestly, it looks completely different in PS and just for grins and giggles, I set it up as a 16 x 30 and printed a section to 8x10 (proportionately) and from that, did increase the midtones by about 12% to open up some of the deeper shadows but they are mountain oaks and have very thick bark. I tend toward a bit more contrast than less and that too could contribute. Thanks for the suggestion though as it ends up making a nice image in the 11x14 range.
