Why whatever do you mean? The moment he buy's that 70-300, he's gonna be back at the camera store to get something with even more reach. Why not cut the middle man and go for it now?

Why not get a 1000mm plus a 2x teleconverter?

I've got 2000mm with no tc but I can add magnification .. but I really need 5000mm without magnification
But it would cost way too much.

I think the 70-300 is a good focal length. I have an older Nikon AF 75-300 which apparently has fantastic IQ and only $100 but not AF compatible with OPs camera body.

I love to have the latest G 80-400mm but no budget now :-/
