advice in which lens to buy

So im looking to buy a decent zoom lens and im torn between :

1. Tamron 70-300mm
2. Sigma 70-300mm
3.nikon 55-200 VR

now my question is will i get sharp images even at 300mm withe the tamron? i heard the sigma has a few problems at 300mm , it seems really nice and u cant beat it for the price either , what do you guys recommend?

If you get the Sigma, get the APO version. (the non-APO version is soft)

Nikon 55-200 vr is a very good lens for the D40. Not the fastest, but on a budget, it will do until you save the $8000 or so for the 600mm f/4.
