Advice on finding the right DSLR

I don't really recommend the Canon - your going to be shooting indoors in an arena so you'll need the best high ISO to low noise you can get, which would be the Nikon.

See if you can find a Nikon D5200 for around $300, and a Tamron 70-300 mm 4.5-5.6 VC which should be around $200 used. A little more than that, a little less than that - whatever you can find.. but those should be pretty good price points for those items.

Thanks for the advice on the Canon. That's good to know!

What about either of these Nikons?

Nikon D5300 24.2 MP DSLR Camera (Black)

Nikon D D5300 24.2 MP Digital SLR Camera - Black (Body only) (Latest Model)

You can go with the D5300, they sell about $100-$150 more than the D5200 on average, so once you add in another $200-$250 for the 70-300mm Tamron with the VC and you might end up going a bit over budget. If your ok with that then either of these would be fine.

This is what KEH wants for the. Canon 60D Digital Camera Body | KEH Camera

Is it worth the buy? Only you can decide that in terms of buying something from eBay. Problem with eBay is the lack of warranty if there is an issue. This is what KEH offers: The KEH Difference Main Page | KEH Camera

Keep in mind there are other good used dealers besides KEH.
Adorama: Canon 60D
B&H: They have no 60D's in stock.

the 60D has been discontinued for what ... 5 years ?

Nope, April of 2013. Did you read the OP's budget?
