Hello everyone,

My printer recently died. I need to buy a new printer that will print word documents, scan images, and most importantly, print high quality photos. Any suggestions? My budget is $500 max CAN. It would be a plus if I could print something larger than letter size.

I just got the canon mg5220 does it all. The photo quality is great. 5 difrent ink tanks. I compared the same image from walmart photo and this printer the color from this printer was far better than walmart. Their is another step up that has 6 ink cartrages not sure what else is diffrent. I swear by canon printers tryed teh rest and they just don't last

I'd maybe consider a good photo printer, and then a separate 'all-in-one' unit, if you have the desk space.

You can get a functional 3-in-1 for $50-$75...and you can use cheap in it.

Then you have $400+ to spend on a proper photo printer. Then you wouldn't have to waste good ink on word documents etc.
(it always gets me going when my wife uses my photo printer (and ink) for printing off recipes or something silly).

Good point. The canon i pointed out actually has 2 black ink tanks one for photo and one for documents. But i also have a full color laser if your going to go the 2 printer solution i would go for a laser you cannot beet the price per page. I have had mine 4 years and just finally blew a black and color cartrage and this printer has seen a fair shair of work at least 2000 pages on the original toner

My printer uses photo ink and also has a separate black cartridge for documents. But if the yellow (or whatever color) runs out...it won't print anything. Seems sort of stupid to me.

I recently started buying Brother products. Their all in one printer MFC-495 with built in fax machine cost me $100. But look into higher models. I like their printers because the cartridges are non moving. They go into air tight slot from the right and is stationary. It's really nice and prevents from smudges from faulty cartridges. They are 4 separate inks and they are really cheap. $11 each and $20 for black

In printers where the cartridges don't move...you have a separate printer head. There are pros & cons, as with everything. The problem with this system (from what I've heard/read) is that the head can get dirty & fouled up...just like cartridge print heads...but in this case, you either have to specially clean them or replace them.

With cartridge heads, you get new print heads every time you change the ink cartridge.

Either way, I rarely print photos on my printer. It's just so much better to have my lab do it...and the results are much better. And when you figure in the costs of ink and high quality paper...printing at the lab really isn't much more expensive.
