I actually did take that same shot closer as well. This is just the one they liked the best! :)

They're all pretty good. I'd rotate #2 a little bit clockwise so the boards of the bridge are level/horizontal. I'd experiment with some crops on that as well... not sure if I'd cut some off the top or the bottom.

That was all their doing! They could have worn trash bags and still been the most adorable family ever!

What were the issues?

They're all nice compositions, my personal criticisms would be that the poses in 1 and 3 seem a little forced. Next time joke around with your subjects to get a more natural pose, works wonders.

I like the idea for no 2, like others say if the subjects were close you would've nailed it. But good job nonetheless!

Thanks! They were trying to get something good for their Xmas card so they wanted something a little "posed"

The sun was in an awful place in the sky and we had a hard time finding a place where the sun wasn't shinning directly onto their faces. :( I suppose I should put one of those up so you can take a look.

You're thinking like a pro already! Getting away from the horrible harsh light destroying the exposure, composition and pose instead finding a much nicer softer light that won't make them go blind

YES! Some of my would be favorite shots were destroyed by crap lighting!
AHHHHH :grumpy:

Welcome to world of photography! 99% of your shots will be pants but the 1% will the ones you're incredibly proud of.

While I agree that these were probably "ruined" lets look at what you could have done with what you had. Maybe next time try some fill flash to compensate for the harsh shadows or a simple change of position to use the available light better. If you had unlimited funds you could have set up a full shade and mobile lighting system. but one can wish.

Lets hope I win the lotto! I tried changing their positions but bc her husband is 6'7 it was hard for him to avoid the sunlight no matter where we went!!!

A lot of potentially good shots are ruined by a photographer due to lack of knowledge about light and how to manipulate it. All of these are prime examples depicting that lack of knowledge. Apologies for being curt, but sometimes the truth stings a bit.
