Found this guy at a wildlife preserve in Martinez, CA. He is missing a leg, and consequently so were some of his mates I saw there with him. Felt kinda sorry for him. But I guess if you have wings who needs legs, right?

He's missing a foot as well... Avocets will rest by bringing a leg up and hiding it in their feathers. Herons and many long legged waders do the same.

Nearly all birds do this. They do it to conserve energy/heat.

That was my only keeper from that outing. Still gettin the hang of birding. More to come though as I am sure I'll return there soon as it is really close.
