I've been doing quite a bit of research online looking through reviews, forums and comparing prices and I think I've settled into a decent 'starter' set, but would like to get a few opinions more pertinent to my specific situation before I confirm my choices.

I'm pretty much decided on a d90 body. I initially thought about going for a d3k or d5k for the cheaper price but while this will be my first DSLR I do have some (rusty) experience shooting film when I was younger. Because of this, I was concerned i would outgrow those bodies quicker than I would like and felt the d90 was a happy medium.

I will be completely starting over in terms of gear/lenses as my current stuff is definitely on the 'old' side of the fence (30+ years, though in the future I may get an adapter so I can still play with them) and I've allotted myself a flexible 'around' $1500. And finally on the topic of new vs used, I've decided to stick with purchasing new to start with since I have a horrible track record with used goods and feel more comfortable this way.

Okay! On to the goodies.
D90 body + 18-105mm VR
Nikon 50mm 1.8
Nikon sb-600
extension tube set
(filters, bag, tripod, etc)
Total: $1550

The tubes are a whimsical purchase..I'm quite interested in macro, but just don't have the budget for a dedicated lens right now and would like to test the waters before committing. It was a toss up between the 35 and 50mm but since I know I will eventually own both, I stuck with the 50mm for now because its a bit cheaper and I want to have at least 1 prime around for low light situations.

My biggest concern with this set up is whether the kit lens will have enough reach to satisfy me until I can afford to upgrade. I'd classify myself as an 'all around' shooter, not preferring one thing over another. Ideally I'd like to nab a 70-200 2.8 but that certainly isn't in the budget right now. Any solutions or ideas? Anything I'm missing or should consider changing? All your opinions are much appreciated!

Sure you can't stretch to a D7000?

You certainly won't out grow that any time soon!

I had considered the d7000, momentarily. It is shiny and new and my grabby hands want, but it eats up my entire budget for kit. Plus I'm pretty sure the d90 is plenty of camera for me. A lot of improvements on the newer cameras, d3100, d5000, d7000 seem to be video related which i have no need of whatsoever. I'd rather save up for good glass and in a few years bump up to a d300 (or its equivalent replacement) if I feel the need for it. But thanks for the suggestion. :)
