I think I'm in the market. Due to a recent ACDF surgery at C5 thru C7, my old ride is too stiff and I ache most of the next day. I'm thinking an aluminum frame to reduce weight and front suspension forks to reduce vibration and shocks. My riding style is some street, but mostly on the Triangle's Greenway Trail System and Umstead Park. The Triangle is Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill or you could refer to it as the home to NC State Wolfpack, Duke Blue Devils and the NC Tarheels. I am also a member of REI and they just delivered my dividend check and a 20% discount on one item. They carry Cannondale, Marin, Novara, Diamondback and maybe something else. It'd be nice to save a few bucks at the same time.

I bought my current rig in 1996 and there's nothing wrong with it mechanically. Last year I spent a couple hundred dollars to upgrade the shifters and tires. She's been a good ride through all these years. This is the only shot I have of it.

So how about it? Does anyone ride and have an opinion?

With back problems you need a recumbent. Get one with full back support and make sure it fits.

Oh, wow... you are alive!

I used to ride a hybrid, but a lot of the trails I ride on are a little more than it liked, so I moved to a full mountain-bike a couple of years ago; I'm with designer, look into recumbents!

What is your budget? Is dual suspension out if the equation? So much more comfortable even for normal riding. Also try to get a 29'er. I'd try to find something used to save some money.

By looking at your old frame i can see why your back hurts. Frame geometry is very important for a comfortable ride. Go to a high end shop, explain your needs and they can find a frame that suits your body.

A recumbent bike? I get on them when I go to the gym, but I think I'd rather go through a bit of pain than to sit on one of those while on the trails. Ego? Possibly, but I have far too many years in the saddle being upright.

I took some spins on a few bikes the last couple of days. My budget is in the $750 range and with the coupons mentioned above, this one falls in that area.

Thanks for the replies and please keep them coming.

To lessen any big hits you may want to get a suspension seatpost. I have one for the back of my Cannondale MTB tandem and supposedly is pretty nice.

That looks like a nice ride; have you thought about dropping an extra $150 - 200 on a good quality suspension seat-post?

LMAO
hey, at least I have a suspension seatpost to talk about lol

I sometimes put the suspension post on my training MTB an old Trek 970 that I use to romp around the neighborhood. That frame is stiff, and with stiff 32 3x wheels you can take a beating on it.

On another note, on my aero road bike which has a sloping top tube, I use a long carbon fiber seatpost to dampen road harshness that is designed with box chainstays and stiff aero seatstays. That bike is stiff but the seatpost dampens the road better than my carbon frame.

My main MTB is a full suspension .. it's nice an cushy on the heavy bumps. :)
