MAME = Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator

it's a little programme that turns your highly overpowered pc/mac into an old coin-op, which means you can play all the old arcade games you used to be stuck on in your mis-spent youth.

For a mac, use MacMAME
and for a pc, people generally use MAME32

MAME is just the basic programme, to actually use it you need things called ROMs which are basically the workings of the games themselves. You can get these freely over the interweb and especially using file sharing programmes such as kazaa or something. It is technically illegal to use/own the roms unless you have the 'original' programmes but of course this is not much different to 'sharing mp3s'
