any reccomendations for my first dSLR?

after checking out the D7000, it would be awesome to have, but i really can't spend that money on one. when i said $800 max i really meant it. after some other research i've decided to get the Nikon D5200. looks like a really good camera. i wont be buying it now, but in a few months. and one more question...if i get the D5200 should i buy it with the 18-55mm kit lens (good for landscapes, wildlife etc..?) or buy just the body and get another lens instead (which i have no idea which one yet)?

18-55 lenses are a good start as they are flexible. The Nikon d5200 is nice with reviews stating image quality up with the top crop dslr models. One thing to consider is that Nikon entry level cameras have no built in focus motor. This takes an option away to use some older Nikon and third party lenses. This is not a deal breaker for most but there are a lot of these second-hand lenses that are very good at Good price points. What you may save on the body now could go on more expensive lenses later. Having said that you may never need the body motor and there is that flip out screen

Go for the Nikon d5300. Its got a lot of neat things tucked into it for people who are out on the run.

over a month later i finally picked up the D5200, just last night. so far i love it, haven't taken it out of the house yet either. plus Best Buy gave me a free SD card and cheap camera bag.

D5200 is am awesome camera and just between the two of us I would also take the D5200 over the D7000, this camera is a great value for your money.

Congrats on the D5200. I use a 5100 myself and love it.
