I feel the lighting could have been better on the subject, but it was hard to balance with the light coming in from the background. What could I have done to make it better?

Also.. underexposed? How do I change that?

The light in the window seems overexposed as well.

I'm not completely sure,
but another lighting source?

next time try reflecting the window light back onto your subject. I like this one though and I think it can fixed with the right edits.

Brightly backlit subjects are always a challenge. In this case, I think a flash low, image right (about 15-20 deg off lens axis) would work well. As to "value"; if you like, then it does. I can't say it much appeals to me, but there's lots of potential.

Lighting could be a lot better you need to add some flash to it, i wouldn't both with pp just reshoot it. Here's one of mine and my daughters dog that i backlit with a 580ex with a softbox camera left and reflector camera right

The only value would likely be to you. Investigate "fill flash" and OCF (off-camera flash) : Strobist and http://www.planetneil.com/

DSLR cameras have several light metering modes, so they can handle different lighting situations. Read your camera manual to learn about the metering modes you have available.

For instance, you could have spot metered, and exposed for the dogs face, but then the windows would have been drastically overexposed. Cameras don't 'see' the way we see with our eyes.

Without flash you have to expose for one or the other. By using flash (strobed light) you can expose ambient light (the windows) separately from the strobed light (on the dogs face.)
