Apparently we have been pronouncing GIF wrong all these years

At the very least I have been pronouncing it wrong all these years. Its a soft G as in "jif".

Does it really matter? I probably type it 99% of the type anyway, compared to speaking about it... And I read it in my head. I'll say it how I want.

That's more of a UK English vs American English kind of thing. Not really comparable to GIF / JIF in my opinion, if that's what you're getting at.
