the apple itself doesn't look fresh
it also seems quite dark from what i can see.

Yep, looks like the side of the apple we can see is under exposed.

A square crop will also help.

just seems to me that if you take a picture of any food item, it should be somewhat appetizing but I really really really don't want to eat that apple

A nicer looking apple would help a whole lot. If you try this again I would give try putting a little mist on it.
