Atmospheric fog?

I need to produce a foggy kind of effect, in a forest. It might be naturally backlit, or more likely, by strobes. I don't think using a dry ice machine is practical, since these use mains power? Are fog machines the answer? Could I get away with a white smoke canister? Obviously we don't want to set fire to the forest!

There are "fog filters" which when shot in backlighted conditions, tend to produce a reasonable facsimile of real fog. Cokin made some fog filters, as well as some of what they called "pastel" filters, which also produced a foggy-looking effect. I suppose a smoke cannister of some type would also work, by creating a lot of suspended particulate matter in the air.

If you use a hot smoke device, your smoke may rise.
There is a method of cooling smoke, by passing it through bins of ice to cool it so it stays low. It would still require power, because you will need a fan to force it through.

I've seen a few battery powered machines, I guess I'll have to rent as those run over $1000. I did a bit of reading elsewhere and gained the impression that 'haze' hangs around longer than 'fog'. So I need a smoke machine rather than a fogger? Confused.

If mains powered I wonder if the new AB Mini Vagabond Lithium would be up to the job of powering it? That is on the shopping list for certain.
