Autofocus issue or user error? Help!

ALSO... run the focus ring on your lens all the way in minimum distance, let the camera auto-focus and take a test shot. Run it all the way in again. Let it focus again. Take another test shot. Do this a half dozen times.

Woah... I just turned the focus ring all the way to minimum distance, and then tried to auto-focus on something about 10 feet away, and it wouldn't even TRY to focus (no searching... nothing.) If I backed a little off minimum distance, it would eventually at least try to focus - very unsuccessfully (totally blurry). Then if I backed it off more, it would finally snap into (almost) focus. When I would turn it all the way to maximum distance, it seemed to work okay.

So... what does this tell us. Anything?

Also, tried to clean the contacts on lens and body, and blow out the autofocus sensor area again. No luck. Same issue.

I was thinking for Nikon D200. thanks for all the info. I am new in forum, looking forward to involve in more activities. there is so much info in forum. Thanks to my friend who talk me into this.

Just a final update... I appreciate all the help, but it seemed like all the answers were adding to my "this is too much for me to tackle" feeling. SO... I sold this body as "needs repairs - focusing issue" on eBay, and some lucky, mechanically gifted person is going to whip this thing into shape and have a great camera.
