Love story with a happy ending

Sep 6 2005

An elderly couple who lost touch when their fledgling teenage romance was scuppered by a cinema mix-up are to marry after their love was rekindled in a sheltered housing complex.

George Thompson and Beryl Brace, both now 76, first met when they were 18 but lost touch after a series of brief encounters in the late 1940s.

They went their separate ways after a misunderstanding about which cinema they were supposed to meet at, leaving them both believing they had been "stood up".

One was standing outside Wolverhampton's Savoy picture house while the other was waiting at the Odeon.

Mr Thompson tried to explain the mix-up to his sweetheart in the pub the following day, but she gave him the brush off when he tried to buy her and a friend a drink.

The pair did not see each other again until April this year when they both moved into opposite flats at new sheltered accommodation at Bridge Court in Wednesfield, Wolverhampton.

Mr Thompson did not initially recognise his former squeeze but romance soon blossomed once more and the pair are now engaged.

The couple will be married on September 24 at Wolverhampton Register Office before hosting a reception at the council-run home on Moat House Lane.

Both have been married before.

Glen Mason, director for adults and community on Wolverhampton City Council, said: "We are thrilled that the couple have found each other after all these years."
