My next assignment is black and white portrait photography. I'm looking for any useful tips / articles / books you guys can recommend to me for my project. Thanks :)

Film or digital? If film, what film would you use? What lighting?

If digital you have far less control over the tonality and density of a B&W photograph made using the monotone menu option of a digital camea compared to making a B&W photograph on film by choosing the film and the use of a variety of filters on the lens.

I completely agree with KmH. Just turning a colour digital image to greyscale makes it lose so much tonality, depth and contrast. Doesn't matter how you approach it with digital, the results are ALWAYS far superior when using a B&W film! You get more control over the processing too as you can play with the dev time in the darkroom.

It's using film. We have a small school studio with a soft box and umbrella thing, but that's about all ...
